In-home service workers that unsuspecting customers admit into their homes could be violent felons with criminal records since there are no federal laws, and only “spotty” local laws, requiring service companies to perform background checks on their workers, according to a report from TODAY National Investigative Correspondent Jeff Rossen available at http://www.today.com/news/violent-felons-sent-homes-service-workers-6C10935682.
Rossen reports a that 4-year-old girl was chased around her living room by a sexual predator with a criminal past who was sent to fix a fireplace by a well-known and “trusted” company in the Seattle, Washington area. The predator, who was later caught and put back behind bars, “had spent 15 years in prison for attacking another little girl” but the company that sent him on the job did not perform a criminal background check.
While these cases may be rare, Rossen reports that “convicted criminals have been sent to work inside people’s homes from Chicago to Memphis to New York” and violent felons have robbed and attacked people in their own homes.” One such incident occurred in 2001 when a Florida woman was murdered by a contractor sent to work in her home who turned out to be a convicted sex offender on parole.
As reported earlier on ESR News, the victim’s sister, Lucia Bone, founded a non-profit organization named after her deceased sibling called Sue Weaver C.A.U.S.E. (Consumer Awareness of Unsafe Service Employment) to fight for tougher regulations such as standardized background checks for in-home service workers.
